MEN-tal health

Mental health in men is something that we still don't discuss enough. Men are "supposed to be" strong, alpha, brave, courageous yadda yadda... can you not be all of those things AND struggle with mental health issues? Not according to society.

I try to avoid celebrity gossip so I was unaware of the story of Sam Sarpong - brother of TV presenter June who completed (not committed) suicide in October 2015.

I think when writing about suicide, we ought to be very careful what we say. June states "It was a moment of madness, something just went off and he lost complete control over his mind"

When an individual sees suicide as the "only option", I can assure you this decision is not from a mad mind. It is human nature to preserve one's own life above all else.

Looking at my own circumstances, the times I took a near fatal overdose I was the clearest I had ever been. It was not a rash decision, I had weighed up all other options and suicide was the only one that made the most amount of sense.

I have written a few blogs now about suicide and more specifically, male suicide. Please feel free to have a look.

If you are thinking about suicide, there are many services available for you. If you are in a crisis, please take yourself to A&E.

I am always happy to listen and offer advice via Facebook or over the phone.
